Focusing on his first experience of warfare during the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, he describes trench warfare and the enemy snipers who killed almost all of the officers creating confusion among the untried troops. He also describes his participation in battle at Armentiers reinforcing the Bedford Regiment of the 10th Infantry Battalion and later at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
