The relationship between news reporting, current affairs, news documentary and print news is the topic of the 4th session. Chairperson, Donald Gillies, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, introduces Don J. Macdonald, former News Director, CBC, Liss Jeffrey and Lon Dubinsky of McGill and Concordia Universities, respectively. Don Macdonald talks about the evolution of news and current affairs in Canadian broadcasting. He shares with the audience his recollections of people who contributed to the shaping of news and current affairs journalism, and about the milestones in the growth of news broadcasting. He refers to the parallel development of news and current affairs programming on television, the friction between the two competing services, the separation of the two and the eventual reconciliation. He lists but a few of the most important programs that were produced by news and current affairs: THIS HOUR HAS SEVEN DAYS, THE FIFTH ESTATE, THE NATIONAL & THE JOURNAL. Donald Gillies calls on Ms. Jeffrey to read her paper entitled "From Feature Documentary to the Television News Doc: Observations on the Evolution of a Canadian Tradition". Jeffrey refers to a McGill study on the "ecology of the audience for information programming", elaborates on that theme and on the conclusions derived therefrom. The types of measurements used to collect the data are referred to as well as their significance in respect of several considerations. The speaker connects the development of news and information services to Canadian culture in the sense that the latter informed the former. She relates this fact to the structure of contemporary information programs: documentaries with news content and vice versa. After speaking of the relationship between the National Film Board and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Ms. Jeffrey proposes a number of topics in the same vein that would increase understanding of broadcast news reporting in relation to documentaries.~In his paper "Ancestral Awakening: The Reshaping of Broadcast News", Lon Dubinsky speaks of the connection between the print media and TV broadcast news. He refers to the history of that connection, pointing first to the divorce between speech and the written word, then to the adoption of print news conventions by broadcast journalism, and the eventual coming together of text and television broadcasting. He cites examples to illustrate the ritualistic dependence of broadcasters on the written word while on the air. For added support to this thesis, Dubinsky refers to the power of TV to give prestige to politics just as the print media were able to do before the advent of TV, and still does. The session ends with a series of commented screenings.
