Fonds consists of correspondence between Warren in Halifax and Lord Melville, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, as well as correspondence and newspaper clippings of others, regarding the naval conflicts of 1812 to 1814. Warfare is discussed: troop movements, security necessary during a war, and the blockading system. Various modes of warfare are proposed by Melville. Warren also writes offering suggestions to Melville. This material is located on microfilm reel A-2076.

Warren, Sir John Borlase, 1753-1822 : Sir John Warren was born on 2 September 1753 in England and entered the Navy as an able seaman on the Marlborough in 1771. In 1778, he was promoted to be fourth lieutenant of the Nonsuch and in 1781, promoted to the rank of captain. In 1799, he was advanced to the rank of rear-admiral and in 1810, to the rank of admiral. He served in the Mediterranean, and in 1813, he was appointed commander-in-chief on the North American station from which he was relieved the following Spring. Warren married in 1780, Caroline, daughter of Lieutenant-General Sir John Clavering. More biographical information may be obtained from Dictionary of National Biography, New York, 1909.
