Fonds consists of machine-readable and paper copies (Volume 1: Index; Surnames A-K. Volume 2: Surnames L-Z) of entries for RCAF Honours and Awards of the Second World War. These record honours and awards to RCAF personnel for wartime services, as announced or gazetted from 1940 through 1949, ranging from the Victoria Cross down to Mention in Despatches, together with numerous foreign awards. Included is the name, service number and type of award to all 9,200 recipients, with citations or recommendations for approximately 80% of these. Also included is additional biographical material on most of the individuals listed. The data was compiled from the Supplements to Air Force Routine Orders from 1940 to 1949, and supplemented with biographical files held by the Directorate of History, and official correspondence within the records of the Department of National Defence (RG 24) and Governors General Office (RG 7) at the National Archives of Canada, and Royal Air Force records (Air 2) at the Public Record Office.

Halliday, Hugh A, 1940- : Hugh A. Halliday (1940- ), historian, was born and educated in Manitoba. In 1961, he joined the RCAF and was employed as a staff officer in the Air Historian Section and subsequently in the integrated Directorate of History, Department of National Defence. In 1968, he left the forces to teach at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Welland, Ontario. He joined the staff of the Canadian War Museum in 1974 and served in several senior curatorial positions until his retirement in 1995.

Hugh Halliday is the author or compiler of several studies related to the RCAF and Canadian airmen, including: Chronology of Canadian Military Aviation (1975); The Tumbling Sky (1978); 242 Squadron: The Canadian Years (1981); Woody: A Fighter Pilot's Album (1987); with Larry Milberry, The Royal Canadian Air Force at War, 1939-1945 (1990); and Typhoon and Tempest: The Canadian Story (1992). In 1993, he was recognized by the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, the National Aviation Museum, and the Directorate of History, DND, for "his distinguished contributions to the advancement of Canadian aviation history."
