Fonds consists of publications, unpublished papers and speeches, research notes, articles, reports, and notebooks relating to Westman's career as a research chemist with the Ontario Research Foundation, as an Applied Research Consultant, and as Study Director for the Chemical Institute of Canada. The fonds also includes some personal correspondence and financial material. The fonds is organized in nine series.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting various acquaintances and activities of Dr. Westman.

Westman, A. E. R., (Albert Ernest Roberts), 1900-1985 : Albert Ernest Roberts Westman (1900-1985), chemist, was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1924 with a PhD. in physical and electrochemistry. He was a Research Associate in Ceramics at the University of Illinois, 1924-1928, and Associate Professor, Department of Ceramics, Rutgers University, 1928-1929. In 1929, he was appointed Director of the Department of Chemistry for the recently-established Ontario Research Foundation, and served in that position until 1958, when he became the ORF's Director of Research.

After retirement in 1965, he established himself as an applied research consultant, acting principally as consultant to the ORF on glass and ceramic research. From 1966-1968, he acted as study director for a survey of research and development in the chemistry and chemical engineering industries undertaken by the Chemical Institute of Canada. He published a final monograph, Phosphate ceramics, in 1977.

Dr. Westman's principal areas of specialization lay in glass and ceramic chemistry and in phosphate inorganic chemistry, but he also published works on statistical and quality control methods, fuels, electrolytic hydrogen and oxygen, foundry control, air pollution, filter paper chromatography, refractories and other areas. He received the Frank Forrest Award, American Ceramics Society, in 1954.
