Initially, King George III, who was also Elector of Hanover, made himself a loan of five Hanoverian battalions. Beginning early in 1776-1783, however, agreements were signed with a number of the German princes to supply bodies. By these arrangements, Britain obtained the services of some 30,000 men. A large body of these troops served in the Northern Command in North America, which made its headquarters in Quebec, and many participated in the ill-fated Burgoyne expedition.
The word Hessian refers to the troops sent from the German principalities of Hesse-Cassel and Hesse-Hanau. German troops in America also originated from Brunswick, Anhalt-Zerbst, Anspach-Beyreuth and Waldeck.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in two lots, the first 364 microfiches of the English language translations of transcripts of original documents were acquired in 1990 from G.K.
