The fonds consists of family papers, photographs, and art work collected by Philip Chaplin, dating 1592-1729 and 1779-1991. The Gugy, Geggie, Mills and Chaplin families are represented in the textual records. The graphic material comprises photographs depicting the activities of Charles J. Chaplin and family, including portraits, an amateur photo album and other photographs, and one watercolour portrait miniature.

Chaplin-Gugy (family) : The Chaplin Family Papers begin in 1592 but centre mostly around Valentine Chaplin (1776-1853) and his children. Valentine Chaplin was a London merchant and left diaries and letterbooks from voyages to Buenos Aires and Montreal. His son Edward (1825-1899), settled in Montreal and corresponded with his father and brothers in England (including Charles John Chaplin, 1833-1914) as well as with his wife's family (Annie Mills, 1841-1897). Much of the legal documents and correspondence deal with the execution of Valentine Chaplin's Will.

The Geggies came from Berwich on Tweed in the 1850's and settled in Quebec City. James Geggie married Leila Gugy (1854-?). Leila's father was Colonel Bartholomew Conrad Augustus Gugy who was a soldier, member of parliament, lawyer and pamphleteer. B.C.A. Gugy was born 6 November 1796 at Trois-Rivières and died on 11 June 1876 at Beauport. (See "Dictionary of Canadian Biography", vol. 10 for more information on the B.C.A. Gugy).
