In 1947 and 1948, branch organizations were organized in Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg and other centres across Canada where Germans were concentrated. Through co-operation between the central organization in Kitchener and local branches, parcels of food, clothing and medical supplies were distributed in Germany and Austria. Concentrating on relief work during the 1940s and the early 1950s, by the mid-1950s the society increasingly turned its energies toward Germans in Canada. While formally continuing to function under its old name, in 1956 it took on the name Canadian German Society for everyday purposes to give emphasis to its new focus.
