Fonds consists of letter books, 1812-1867, and miscellaneous papers, including primarily letters received 1794-1891. Strachan's sermons have not been included. Legal papers, 1807, 1812, including Strachan's marriage contract and a promissory note for land purchased. Miscellaneous papers including a bill of sale of land to Strachan, a letter from the trustees of St. Andrew's Church, Toronto, part of a sermon on Christian fellowship and a treatise on clergy reserves in the Canadas and a letter from John A. Macdonald to Strachan, 1861. Microfilmed material is located on reels M-539 to M-551.

Strachan, John, 1778-1867 : John Strachan was ordained a deacon of the Church of England at Cornwall, 1803. In that same year he set up a grammar school there and in 1812, Strachan became rector at York and headmaster of the York Grammar School. He was a member of the Executive Council of Upper Canada, 1815-1836, and of the Legislative Council, 1820-1841. Strachan was appointed archdeacon of York, 1825, and in 1839 he became the first Anglican Bishop of Toronto. He helped obtain the Royal Charter for King's College and served as its first president, 1827-1848. Strachan withdrew before the college was reorganized as the non-sectarian University of Toronto and in 1852 founded the University of Trinity College.
