Fonds consists of personal papers of Philip and Margaret Day Surrey, arranged in the following series: Correspondence, 1939-1989; Philip Surrey's Work Logs, 1963-1989; Margaret Surrey's Unpublished Biography of Philip Surrey (and diary excerpts), n.d., 1921-1964; Exhibition Catalogues and Reviews, 1932-1989.

The fonds contains photographs relating to the lives of Philip Surrey and Margaret Day Surrey including informal portraits of their friends; photographs by Philip Surrey of works of art.

The fonds also contains sketchbooks of works by Philip Surrey, 1930-1983, including drawings of a voyage to the Arctic on board the D'Iberville; manuscript and technical notes; numerous sketches of figures, landscapes, cityscapes, processions, hockey players, early 19th century male costumes; loose drawings including some preparatory drawings for oil paintings.

Surrey, Philip, 1910-1990 : Philip Surrey was born in Calgary in 1910, where his parents had briefly settled to try farming. He spent the next 10 years travelling the world with his family, moving from Canada to Australia to the Far East. His early education was in India and England. After his parents separated, he and his mother returned to Canada and settled in Manitoba. He attended high school in Winnipeg and in 1926 joined the engraving firm of Brigdens which underwrote his art classes at the Winnipeg School of Art, where he studied under LeMoine FitzGerald. In 1929 Surrey left Winnipeg for Vancouver, to join the firm of Cleland-Kent Engraving. He took night classes at the Vancouver School of Art, studying design under J.W.G. MacDonald and lifedrawing under Frederick Varley, with whom he became close friends. In 1936 Surrey went to New York, where he studied at the Art Students League. He moved to Montreal in 1937 and got a job at the Montreal Standard as photo editor. He was photo and feature editor at the Weekend Magazine from 1937 until 1964, when he semi-retired and became associate editor. Surrey, who had previously exhibited in Vancouver, had his first one-man show in Montreal in 1940 and during the next 20 years had regular solo shows in both Montreal and Toronto, as well as exhibiting in group shows. He was a founding member of the Contemporary Arts Society in 1939. He was also a member of the Eastern Group of Painters, Canadian Group of Painters, Federation of Canadian Artists, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and Canadian Society of Graphic Art.

Philip Surrey met Margaret Day, a teacher, in Montreal in 1938 and they married in 1939. In 1942 Margaret Day Surrey, the poet F.R. Scott, and the English-born poet Patrick Anderson founded the "little magazine" Preview, along with two other Montrealers, Bruce Ruddick, a psychiatrist, and Neufville Shaw, a teacher. Margaret Day Surrey published one short story in Preview and was listed on its masthead for only the first three issues.
