The Post 1 class or series consists of 831 volumes of letterbooks of correspondence between the Post Office and the British Treasury from 1686 to 1931. Since the Treasury had control over all Post Office expenditures, the records focus on the financial aspects of General Post Office operations, both inland and overseas. A significant part of the material also deals with policy, organizational and personnel questions.

The National Archives of Canada has microfilmed volumes 1 to 89 of Post 1 except for the missing volume 7, July 1723 to July 1742. Records copied cover the period 1686 to 1851 and the takeover by the British North American colonies of domestic postal services.

Volumes 1 to 76 (1686-1848) and 84 to 85 (1848-1849) include both outgoing letters from the General Post Office and the Treasury's replies, with related enclosures in some cases. Volumes 86 and 87 (1849-1851) are out-letters only; the corresponding in-letters are in volumes 88 and 89 (1849-1852). Volume 32 is an entry book of copies of correspondence with the Receiver General and the Treasury on specific receipts and disbursements, dated 1821 to 1834, transcribed in part from originals in volumes 32 to 41. Volumes 77 to 83 are indexes.

Types of records found in Post 1 include letters, Treasury circulars, letters of attorney, statements of claim for damages (e.g., those caused by attacks against packet ships in wartime), accounts, warrants, and other financial instruments. The documents are in rough chronological order.

Textual records (Électronique) Finding aid no. 90, British Records on Microfilm, includes a complete microfilm shelf list for the material copied by the National Archives of Canada, giving outside dates for each volume. Volumes 1 to 76 and 84 to 89 are indexed by subject, with varying degrees of details, at either the beginning or the end of each volume. Volumes 49 to 76 (1839-1847) are also indexed in volumes 77 to 83. Finding Aid No. 90 contains a breakdown of the subjects covered separately in each of the seven index volumes. MSS0090 (90: Ouvert)

Textual records (Microforme) Volumes 86-87, outgoing, are indexed with the corresponding in-letters in volumes 88-89. Reel A-1223 contains a complete shelf list for the original British collection. (90: Ouvert)
