Collection consists of microfilmed selections copied from a number of different collections at the National Army Museum, London, England. Includes returns, reports, forms, paylists, accounts, journals, correspondence and other documents dealing with various aspects of the military in North America, 1745 to 1970. This material is located on microfilm reels A-1466 to A-1468.
The collection includes a bound manuscript notebook, copies of inspection returns and other correspondence of Major General F.A. Wetherall, Royal Scots, relating to service in Nova Scotia in 1805, as well as at the Cape of Good Hope and India. There are field equipment returns of the 88th Foot, Quebec Harbour, 1815; J.H. Kennedy's notebook and diary, 97th Regiment, 1880, Nova Scotia; and folders and books of Col. P.L. Binns. There is a manuscript letter to Brigadier General George Townshend, London, from Guy Carleton, 1761; a manuscript diary of General Arthur Reid Lempriere (1835-1927) dealing mainly with the Royal Engineers of Canada, ca. 1860; a cloth bound manuscript volume of regimental orders, a printed poster, circular and report of the particulars relating to the fortifying of Halifax, 1758. There are documents relating to military occurrences, 1803 to 1807, the invention of gunpowder, etc. There is a journal of Col. Arthur Lowry Cole (1817-1885, son of Sir G. Lowry Cole) while serving in Canada with the 43rd Foot, 1857-1858 and various documents relating to the surrender of St. John's, Newfoundland to the French, 1762.
Included are documents relating to George Alan Walker's service in Canada, 1884-1886, the Boer War, 1901-1902 and Sussex Yeomanry, 1904-1907. There are documents relating to John Elgee, 34th Regiment, 1818-1835, and J. Elgee, Middlesex Regiment, 1911. There are documents relating to Col. Robert Campbell, 1779-1836; an account apparently written by General Charles Lee, when a Captain in 44th Foot, describing the assault of Ticonderoga in 1758 together with papers relating to Lee's estate and the Townshend family. There are two manuscript letters dated Louisbourg, October, 1759 from Lt. Henry Browne, Louisbourg Grenadiers. There is a collection of documents relating to Lt. Col. H.E.M. Newman, Royal Engineers and Madras Sappers and Miners, 1919-1946 which includes over 400 letters written to his wife whilst serving on the North West Frontier, 1937-1939, in Burma and India, World War II and with 21 Army Group and BAOR, 1945-1946.
There are documents of Major J.N.C. Kennedy, relating to his service in RMC, Kingston and Royal Engineers, 1834-1915, the Boer War and World War I at Aldershot. Included is a watercolour and pen and ink plan of Fort Garry, 1870, by Kennedy, 1884 and an account of his father's service in the Canadian Voyageurs during the 1st Sudan Campaign. There is a scrapbook of Brigade Surgeon F.B. Baker, Scots Fusiler Guard, 1854-1898. There is material written by Lt. Charles Jadis, Nova Scotia Fencible Infantry, St. John's, Newfoundland, 1805. There are 18 letters relating to the Latimer family and papers of Gen. the Hon. Sir Alexander Maitland, 1st Foot Guards and 49th Foot, 1745-1820.
Included are papers and sketchbooks of Col. Frederick Thomas Maitland, 24th Foot, 1826-1871 relating primarily to his service in Canada including the Rebellion of 1837-1838. This collection also contains notes on surveying by his father, General Frederick Maitland and plans of four barracks in Dublin, 1844. The sketchbooks contain pencil and pen-and-ink sketches by Maitland including views of Quebec and environs but including one of Montreal, New York, Niagara Falls, etc.
