War Office 57 is comprised of 58 bundles of entry books of letters from the Treasury, 1806 to 1816, and bundles of original letters to the Commissary-in-Chief from commissariat officers at various stations abroad, 1810-1817. The National Archives has acquired transcripts of letters and enclosures sent to the Commissary-in-Chief or the Commissary General by officers in Canada and Nova Scotia. For the most part these relate to the establishments and to the acquisition of specie and bills of exchange, but include some material on shipbuilding at Kingston, and to the Chesapeake expedition. The transcripts, volumes 14, 15, 36 and 37, are available on microfilm reel C-10867.

Great Britain. War Office. Commissariat Department : The office of Commissary General of Musters was established shortly after the Restoration for the purpose of maintaining the establishment and providing the Paymaster General with certificates, regarding the actual men in service, upon which he based his estimates for the Treasury. The office was abolished in 1818. Like the Paymaster General, the Commissariat department was subject to abuse, underwent several reforms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and was generally under the control of the Treasury Board until it was transferred to the War Office in 1854.
