Report of the Board of Trade to the House of Commons, 16 January 1706, on the state of the trade with Newfoundland and the western islands. Included are tables of statistics of the Newfoundland fisheries, 1698-1705, together with a discussion of relations between the English and the French engaged in them, and of the part played by the New Englanders in the Newfoundland fishery and trade. Transcripts, 15 pages.

Walpole, Robert, Earl of Orford, 1676-1745 : Statesman.

Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford (1676-1745) was born on 26 August 1676. He was the third son of Robert Walpole (1650-1700) of Houghton in Norfolk, a leading whig squire, by his wife, Mary (ca. 1653-1711), only daughter and heiress of Sir Geoffrey Burwell of Rougham, Suffolk. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, and in 1701 entered Parliament, where he was quickly recognized as a leader of the Whig party.

In the course of his outstanding political career, Walpole held the offices of secretary at war, 1708-1710; treasurer of the navy, 1710-1711; leader of the House of Commons, 1711; paymaster of the forces and privy councillor, 1714; first lord of the treasury and chancellor of the exchequer, 1715-1717 and 1721-1742. Upon his retirement in 1742, he was created 1st Earl of Orford. He was the first minister since the Restoration to make a special study of finance and commerce, and laid the foundations of free trade and modern colonial policy.

Egerton Manuscripts 921 and 922 were added to the holdings of the British Library in 1841. They consist of two folio volumes containing various statistical and political papers, 1609-1732, relating to Great Britain and France, which are said to have belonged to Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745). In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed one small excerpt (Egerton MSS. 921, ff. 3-8) that is of Canadian interest.
