Fonds consists of two volumes of confidential official correspondence, 1867-1868, of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos as Secretary of State for the Colonies. It deals predominantly with his concern for the Fenian activities in Canada and North America. Also contained in the papers are telegrams and printed documents including select papers of the Fenians and of the government of the United States. This material is located on microfilm reel A-402.

The correspondence arose out of a letter from Lord Monck, 12 December 1867, enclosing one from George Kelly to Sir John A. Macdonald saying that 30 Fenians had set out from New York to assassinate Queen Victoria and other prominent people in England. Rumours of an intended invasion of Canada followed. The material may be identified as follows: Add. MSS. 41860, ff. 1-80v., 1867-1868, microfilm reel A-402; Add. MSS. 43742, ff. 1-124v., 1867-1868, microfilm reel A-402.

Buckingham and Chandos, Richard Plantagenet Temple Nugent Brydges Chandos Grenville, Duke of, 1823-1889 : Richard Plantagenet Campbell Temple Nugent Brydges Chandos, third Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1823-1889), was the only son of Richard Plantagenet Temple Nugent Brydges Chandos Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861) and his wife, Lady Mary Campbell (1795-1862), youngest daughter of John, lst Marquess of Breadalbane. He was known as Earl Temple from his birth till 1839, and then as Marquess of Chandos until 1861.

Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he entered Parliament in 1846. He sat as a member of parliament for the borough of Buckingham in the conservative interest, 1846 to 1857. From March 1852 to 1859, he was keeper of the privy seal to the Prince of Wales. He was elected chairman of the London and North-western railway in October 1853. In 1861, he succeeded as the third Duke of Buckingham and Chandos on the death of his father.

He was chairman of the executive committee of the royal commission for the Great Exhibition of 1862, honorary colonel of the lst Middlesex artillery volunteers on 10 July 1865, and was gazetted a privy council on 6 July 1866. When Lord Derby returned to power he appointed Buckingham on 6 July 1866 lord president of the council. He held this place until 8 March 1867 when he succeeded the Earl of Carnarvon as secretary for the colonies. He fulfilled the duties of this post until the Derby-Disraeli administration went out on 8 Dec. 1868.

Historique de la conservation :

Additional Manuscript 41860 was added to the holdings of the British Library in 1929. An additional part of the same material was presented to the British Library in 1934 by the Reverend G.W.T. Tyndale-Biscoe and catalogued as Add. MSS. 43742. In 1958, the National Archives of Canada purchased a microfilm copy of both volumes.
