The story of making paper from logs to newsprint. The pulp paper industry is one of the largest industries in Ontario. The film is shot at the Spanish River Paper and Pulp Company, in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The pulp produced in Ontario in 1922 is amounts to 726,308 tons, with a $27,263,674,000 value, 8542 persons are employed in the industry, and total payroll is $12,237,881,000. Timber is loaded on the conveyer belt from the river, cut into blocks and ground by machine. Some of the blocks are cut into pieces by another machine, and dropped into the grinding room. In the grinding room, blocks are put in the machine to be ground. The pulp is now conveyed to a screen where the large slivers are removed. Then the pulp is pumped through a series of enclosed screens which eliminate all coarse particles. There is another method of producing pulp from wood, called the Sulphite process. In this process, the blocks are reduced to chips and these chips are conveyed on endless belts to boilers with a capacity of seventeen tons. They are reduced to a finished pulp by being cooked by steam. Sulphite pulp is more expensive to produce than ground pulp. The Sulphite process reduces the wood to a plastic state without destroying the length or toughness of the fibres. The belt collects the pulp and transfers it to the cylinder and all the water is squeezed out between the cylinder and the belt. The pulp is sold in this state to paper makers who do not manufacture their own pulp. About 95 percent of the pulp manufactured in Ontario is converted into paper. Newsprint paper is composed of 25 percent sulphite pulp, 75 percent ground wood pulp and a quantity of blue colour to bleach out the yellow. The pulp now goes on the paper making machine, being reeled off as newsprint paper at the rate of 700 per minute. <10mn>
