Item is a diary. It is primarily a record of Belle Kittredge's social life over the winter and spring of 1891-1892 in Port Arthur, Ontario. Diary entries reveal that as a young, single woman, the "winter's pleasurings", as she called them, included listening to the phonograph (for the first time as it turned out), reading, skating and curling, and entertainments in the form of Christmas celebrations and practices for Port Arthur's "Grand Military Concert" which, while staged by the 96th Battalion Algoma Rifles, involved a bayonet exercise performed by a team of women that include Belle Kittredge.

The diary includes statements which indicate that Kittredge participated in church activities, especially those of the Young People's Guild, and took part in formal public debates on questions of the day. On one occasion Kittredge argued the affirmative in a debate on the resolution: "that women entering the professions was beneficial to Canadian society". A discussion of this debate is found in entries for Friday 11 December 1891, pp. 14-16, and Thursday 14 January 1892, pp. 68-72.

The diary also contains information on the acceptance of christianity by some local native people and makes reference to Louis Riel. Kittredge records her meeting with Bob Hobbs in the entry for 14 April 1892. Hobbs describes his service with the North West Mounted Police during the Riel Rebellion of 1885 and claimed that he guarded the captured Riel.

Kittredge, Belle, ca. 1868-1959 : Belle Kittredge, born ca. 1868 in Strathroy, Ont., worked in the Port Arthur, Ontario law office of her uncle, Frank Keefer, in the 1890s. In addition to his law career, Keefer represented Port Arthur and Kenora in the House of Commons from 1917 to 1921. After leaving Port Arthur, Kittredge earned a Master of Arts degree at Trinity College, University of Toronto; she attended Normal School and subsequently taught kindergarten. In 1904 she married Samuel Hungerford of London, Ont.
