Fonds consists of the following: a chronological account of British claims to Nova Scotia, 1621-1730, together with a proposal of Samuel Waldo (1695-1759) for settling Nova Scotia with some 2000 families in ten years, beginning at St. Mary's Bay near Annapolis Royal. The document was apparently preliminary to the petition of Waldo and Wyndham Beawes of London, for a grant of Nova Scotia, which was before the Privy Council, 31 January 1740. (See Acts of the Privy Council, Colonial Series, 1720-1745, No. 486, [p. 545], p. 668.) Transcripts, 7 pages.

Waldo, Samuel, 1695-1759 : Merchant and land speculator.

Samuel Waldo (1695-1759) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in December 1695. He was the eldest surviving child of Jonathan Waldo of Boston and his wife Hannah, née Mason. He began his business as a merchant and official mast agent with capital advanced by his father. In 1722, he married Lucy, daughter of Major Francis and Sarah (Whipple) Wainwright of Ipswich, Massachusetts, who bore him three sons and three daughters. Land speculation on a grand scale became his chief interest and he is especially notable for his efforts to settle the lands between the Muscongus and Penobscot rivers on the coast of Maine.

In 1730, Waldo purchased from John Nelson, the aged heir of Sir Thomas Temple, the questionable claim to Sir William Alexander's 1621 patent to land in Nova Scotia. He spent a considerable amount of time in London, 1731-1732 and 1737-1738, attempting to validate this claim to virtually all the land "lying between the River St. Croix and St. Lawrence," which he proposed to settle with foreign protestants from Switzerland and the Palatinate. In spite of the Privy Council's rejection of his case, he never abandoned his claims. When the Massachusetts General Court decided to organize an expedition against Louisbourg, 1745, Waldo was commissioned as a brigadier-general and placed as second in command to William Pepperrell. He died of apoplexy, 23 May 1759, at Bangor, Maine. In 1760, his body was removed to King's Chapel Burial Ground, Boston.

Additional Manuscript 19049 consists of a collection of miscellaneous papers relating to colonial subjects, which was added to the holdings of the British Library in 1852. In 1919, the National Archives of Canada transcribed ff. 1-2v of the collection.
