Fonds consists of pre-political papers, originals; political papers, original; books, originals; post-political career, originals; Royal Commission on Violence, originals; volumes 33 and 34 are in horizontal storage and consist of certificates and an election poster; newspaper clippings, microfilm, 5 microfilm reels, M-2515 to M-2519.

Fonds also consists of photographic material includes items relating to Judy LaMarsh's family and career, including autographed portraits of important Canadian political figures such as Charlotte Whitton, Pauline Vanier, Mitchell Sharp, Walter Gordon, J.J. Greene, John Turner, Paul Hellyer, and Paul Martin. Also depicted is Judy LaMarsh in the company of Queen Elizabeth II, Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Lorne Greene, Petra Burka, Stephen Juba, and Yousuf Karsh.

Fonds also includes cartoons relating to the career of Judy LaMarsh by Gord Hunter entitled "Certainly No Love Bird"; an original drawing and a photostatic reproduction of a drawing by Blaine entitled "LaMarsh"; political cartoons relating to the public career of Judy LaMarsh by Reidford, Shane, Chambers, Yardley Jones, Rusins, McNally, Macpherson, Ting, Blaine, Peterson, Collins, Denis Burton, and Graham Pilsworth; 2 charcoal portrait drawings by Douglas Fales.

Fonds contains medallic items including a City of Detroit award medal; a World Health Organization medal; an Ontario Department of Economics and Development Womens' Advisory Committee medal; a George Brown Canadian Centennial commemorative medal; 2 Ontario Government Role of Mining Canadian Confederation commemorative medals; a Fathers of Confederation medal; a Niagara Falls, Ontario, Centennial medal; a Cape Breton Miners' Museum medal; 3 Yellowknife Canadian Centennial medals; a St. Paul, Alberta, Canadian Centennial medal.

Fonds also includes sound recordings of CBC's national morning show with Judy LaMarsh, 1976; The Judy LaMarsh open line show, 1973; CBC's production of A Christmas Carol; and speeches by LaMarsh. Fonds also consists of interviews with LaMarsh including an interview from the CFRB radio program Memoirs of a Bird in a Gilded Cage, 1969.

In addition, fonds consists of moving image recordings including a travelogue on New Zealand; the CBC telecast of the Centennial Christmas Celebrations on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, 1967; the CBC television documentary Once Upon a Hundred Years (1967); LaMarsh's visit to an Italian television studio; a visit by the Queen Mother; and a recording of the LaMarsh funeral, produced by CBC (Toronto) Television News, 1980.

LaMarsh, Judy, 1924-1980 : Judy LaMarsh, cabinet minister, lawyer and journalist, was born in 1924 at Chatham, Ont., and graduated from Hamilton Normal School in 1943. LaMarsh enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps serving first as a draughtsmen, then as a linguist - translator in the Japanese language, and finally as head of the Tactics and Strategy Intelligence Team at the Pacific Military Research Section. Following her discharge in 1946, LaMarsh resumed her studies at the University of Toronto and at Osgoode Hall. In 1950 she joined her father's law firm in Niagara Falls. She became the first woman solicitor for a Canadian municipality as well as an accomplished criminal lawyer.

LaMarsh was a Member of Parliament, representing Niagara Falls, from 1960-1968. She was appointed a Member of the Privy Council in 1963. She served as Minister of National Health and Welfare, 1963-1965, and as Secretary of State, 1965-1968.

Judy LaMarsh's activities following her political career were many and varied. She continued to practise law temporarily and was visiting Professor of Law at York University, 1974-75. As an author she wrote her political autobiography in 1969 and several political novels. She was a syndicated political columnist with the Toronto star, 1974-75. As a broadcaster, she was Radio Broadcast Host for CKWX, Vancouver, 1972-73, Radio Broadcast Host, CBC Radio, 1975-76, and Television Host with TV Ontario, 1974-77. From 1975 to 1977 Judy LaMarsh chaired the Ontario Royal Commission on Violence in the Communication Industry.

Note générale :

Original papers were received in 1980 from Pamela V. Walker for the LaMarsh estate, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Caracatures and charcoal portraits were acquired from the artists. Gorde Hunter cartoon and photostatic reproduction were acquired from the estate of Judy LaMarsh. Moving images and sound recordings were acquired in 1981.
