The fonds consists of a transcript of the register of baptisms, marriages, and burials, 1805-1831, for the Roman Catholic parish of St. Raphael's, pp. 1-994, together with an index, pp. 1-127.

St. Raphael's Church (Saint Raphael West, Ont. : Roman Catholic) : The congregation of St. Raphael's was the first, and from about 1786 to 1833 the only, Roman Catholic congregation in Glengarry County, Upper Canada. Its priest served the needs of the Highland Scots and United Empire Loyalists who first settled Glengarry and the congregation became the mother of all the later Roman Catholic congregations of Glengarry.

Its first priest was the Reverend Alexander Macdonell of Scotus (ca.1750-1803). A later incumbent, the Reverend Alexander Macdonell (1762-1840), became the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Kingston (Regiopolis) in 1826. The first church known as the Blue Chapel, wa probably built about 1789, and St. Raphael's was officially erected as a parish in 1802.

The completeness and accuracy of the transcriptions have been questioned and researchers unable to use the originals at St. Raphael's may be able to use microfilm copies of them at the Archives of Ontario in Toronto, or might find it useful to make comparisons with another transcript available here, in the Gravelle Collection, MG25-G271, volume 18, which overlaps it to some extent.
