Fonds consists of the business records of Pedlar People Limited consist mostly of trade catalogues, photographs, and advertising material relating to pressed metal roofing, siding, ceilings, and decorative architectural components for a wide range of buildings: residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial, and ecclesiastical. A small amount of material concerns Canadian competitors in the field and includes some of their important catalogues. There are also varying amounts of material relating to other products such as logging flumes, lath and expanded metal, barn and stable equipment. Other records consist of account books of various types, of some correspondence pertaining to shell production contracts during World War II and to Pedlar's business connection with the Quebec Paved Pipe Company, of miscellaneous post war correspondence and of some personal correspondence from the W.R. Gieke family. The amount of correspondence is generally limited, but the earlier correspondence does illustrate why this company, unlike many of its competitors, survived the 1930's Depression, 1861, 1891-1971.

The fonds also contains photographs related to Pedlar People operation and products; views of barns and culverts using galvanized steel, [1900-1960].

Fonds consists of plans and drawings of barns and stables in Ontario and Quebec for which galvanized steel parts were fabricated by the Pedlar People Limited, along with drawings of shell casing and blueprints of ammunition boxes produced by the same company under war contracts.

Pedlar People (Firm) : In 1861 Henry Pedlar began making kitchen utensils in his Oshawa hardware store. His son George Henry Pedlar continued this work and in 1892 opened a stamping plant for the manufacture of metal roofing, siding, ceilings and other metal architectural components which were both decorative and functional.

This company, the Pedlar Metal Roofing Company, was incorporated in 1911 as The Pedlar People Limited. Besides the products mentioned, The Pedlar People have also produced a wide range of other metal products including tinsmithing supplies, metal lath and plastering accessories used in fireproof construction, culverts, drainage pipes, prefabricated metal buildings, metal logging flumes, barn and stable equipment, bins, lockers, work benches, and various expanded metal products.

These products were manufactured in Oshawa and sold and installed in Canada, South America, South Africa, Japan, Australia, and probably in other countries as well. They had a major impact on architecture and methods of building as they were both durable and an economical way of achieving the desired ornateness which was becoming prohibitively expensive in labour-intensive wood and plaster products.
