Collection consists of the photocopied reports of source searches in Britain, and microfilmed copies of selected documents in the holdings of the British Library, that relate to the treaty research project at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, of which Professor Lawford was director. The material pertains to treaties, from approximately 791 to 1960, between England and other powers, including those that involved France and British North America and, later, Canada and the U.S.A. The photocopied notes in files 1 and 2 provide descriptions of a large number of documents, including almost all of the 44 manuscripts at the British Library from which the selections on microfilm reels A-909 to A-912 were made.

Lawford, Hugh John, 1933- : Professor Hugh John Lawford (1933- ) was born on 8 September 1933 in Edmonton, Alberta. He was the son of John Radomsky Lawford and his wife Ruth Havergal Lawford. Educated at King Edward School and Strathcona High School, Edmonton, he received a B.A. in 1954 and LL.B. in 1955 from the University of Alberta. As a Rhodes Scholar, he attended the University of Oxford and received his B.C.L. from Wadham College in 1957.

In 1958, Lawford was called to the Bar of Alberta and in the same year became Assistant Professor of Law at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. In 1962, he was called to the Bar of Ontario and became Associate Professor of Law at Queen's. From 1964 to 1965 he was a Special Assistant to the Government House Leader. In 1965 he became Professor of Law at Queen's and from 1965 to 1966 was a Special Advisor to the Prime Minister. From 1968 to 1973 he was Director of the QUIC/LAW Project. Since 1973 he has been President of QL Systems Ltd.

In the early 1960s, when he was director of the treaty research project at Queen's University, Professor H.J. Lawford had surveys of relevant sources in Great Britain made on his behalf. On the basis of this research, he purchased from the British Museum (now the British Library) microfilm copies of a number of treaty documents selected from 44 manuscripts in the Library's Cottonian, Harleian, Lansdowne, Royal, Stowe, and Additional manuscript collections.

Textual records (Électronique) Finding aid 1868 provides shelf lists for both the files and microfilms in this collection. A rearrangement of the shelf list for the microfilm, in the order of the British Library's call numbers, is also provided, in order to facilitate reference to the descriptions of the material given in the British Library's catalogues. Precise references are supplied in the shelf list both to the catalogues of the British Library and to the excerpts and annotations of them found in files 1 and 2 of this collection.
