Shatzmiller, Joseph, 1936- : Joseph Shatzmiller, born in 1936 at Haifa, Israel, studied Jewish and European history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, M.A., 1965. From 1960 to 1965 he served on the editorial board of the Weizmann Institute Archives, and was involved in the publication of several volumes of the Chiam Weizmann letters. He received his Ph.D. from Aix-en-Provence University, France in 1967 and later published his thesis, "Recherches sur la communaté juive de Manosque au Moyen Age" in book form, 1973. He was associated with the University of Haifa as Professor of History, 1967 to 1972, and as Chairman of the Department of Jewish History 1970 to 1972.

Professor Shatzmiller came to Canada in August, 1972 to join the staff of the Department of History at the University of Toronto. He served as Visiting Associate Professor from 1972 to 1974 and became a Full Professor in 1974. He taught at the Harvard University Summer School in 1973 and was a Visiting Professor at the Université de Nice (France), 1982-1983. A teacher of Jewish and French history, Professor Shatzmiller specializes in medieval Jewish studies and has published over fifty articles on Jewish life in medieval France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Professor Shatzmiller served as Chairman of the Jewish Studies Programme from 1974 to 1986. The Programme coordinates all teaching of Judaica at the University of Toronto and it has enabled students to obtain an undergraduate degree in Jewish Studies.
