Fonds consists of original and typescript copies of the First and Second World War diaries and letters of Ian Sinclair and his family.

Fonds also consists of philatelic material consisting of World War I military postal covers bearing Passed by Censor and various British / Canadian Expeditionary Force postal markings, from Lt. Ian MacIntosh Sinclair, 13th Canadian Battalion, The Royal Highlanders of Canada, to Miss Deborah Stanton, London, Great Britain.

Fonds also includes Photographic material depicting the activities of Ian MacIntosh Sinclair in Windsor, Nova Scotia, St. John's and Botwood Bay, Newfoundland, Goose Bay, Labrador and Petawawa, Ontario. Other material consists of photographs and postcards of, or collected by, Ian M.R. Sinclair, during the First World War in Canada, England and France. Depicted are officers of the 13th Canadian Battalion, The Royal Highlanders of Canada, Salisbury Plain, December 1914; view of the firing butts at "Canada's Mobilization Camp", Valcartier, Quebce, August 1914; postcard views of Méteren and Ballieul, France; snapshots taken in England and Flêtre, France, including the following individuals: Pte. J.D. MacPherson, Mr. Robert Lindsay, Maj. V.C. Buchanan, Lieut. Douglas Ives, Lieut. W.S.M. MacTier, Lieut. Guy Drummond, Capt. W.H. Clarke-Kennedy, Lieut. A.M. Fisher, Maj. J.W. Taylor, Capt. W.H. Jamieson, Lieut. O.B. Hastings, Capt. K.M. Perry and Lieut. E.M. Sellon.

Sinclair, Ian MacIntosh Roe, 1891-1980 : Ian Sinclair, military officer, (1891-1980), was born in Toronto and educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. At the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Transferring to the 13th Battalion, C.E.F., he proceeded overseas in October 1914 and served throughout the war, seeing action at the 2nd Battle of Ypres, Festubert, 3rd Battle of Ypres, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Passchendaele, Arras, Amiens, and Cambrai. Wounded four times, he was awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order, and was twice mentioned in Despatches for his actions. In 1918, he assumed command of the 13th Battalion and took it into Germany with the Army of the Occupation.

Following his return to Canada in 1919, he re-joined the 48th Highlanders of Canada and commanded that regiment from 1930-1932. During these inter-war years, Sinclair also held various business positions including vice-president of Sinclair Construction Company, 1921-1924, salesman and later manager of The National City Company, Toronto, 1925-1934, and the Western Ontario sales supervisor for Distillers Company Limited, 1935-1939.

In 1940, Lieutenant-Colonel Sinclair assumed command of the Infantry Training Centre at Camp Borden. In 1941, he was appointed officer commanding the 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and took the battalion to Jamaica where it spent two years on garrison duty. He relinquished command of the battalion in 1943 and assumed various senior staff appointments in Canada, retiring in 1946. He then resumed his business career, serving in several senior administrative positions with St. John Ambulance until his retirement in 1962.

The First and Second World War diaries were received in 1984 and 1985 from Mrs. Ian Sinclair of Toronto. The First World War letters of Ian Sinclair and his family were received in 1993 from Mr. D.L. Sinclair of Toronto.
