Bodrug, John, 1874-1952 : John Bodrug, clergyman and community leader, was born on 7 April 1874 in the village of Upper Bereziv, Kolomyia District of western Ukraine, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He graduated from the Teacher's Seminary in 1896 and taught school in Lower Bereziv.

He immigrated to Canada arriving on 2 May 1897. He worked for a short time on the railroad and then at the request of the Canadian government, worked as a "manager" among the Russian Doukhobor immigrants in Canada.

He also worked among the Ukrainian immigrants establishing schools and teaching in the new communities. In November 1899, he married Olga Bachinsky in Dauphin, Manitoba. In 1903,he helped to found the newspaper Kanadiiskyi Farmer and in 1905 he became the first editor of Ranok (Morning).

John Bodrug completed his theological studies in 1904 at Manitoba College. He established the Ukrainian Evangelical Church in Winnipeg in 1907 and the Ukrainian National Church in Newark, New Jersey, in 1909. During 1908-1910, John Bodrug lived in New York.

He retired from his pastoral duties in 1923 but continued to maintain his interest in the Ukrainian evangelical movement throughout his life. After he retired, he lived in the Toronto area. He died on 2 June 1952 in New York City at the age of 78. He was survived by three sons and three daughters.
