Fonds consists of correspondence with authors and politicians, 1933-1968; Canadian Authors Association, 1927-1955; Canadian Author and Bookman, 1942-1947; Canadian Writers' Foundation, 1943-1949; Encyclopeadia Britannica, 1943-1948; the Grolier Society, 1942-1949; correspondence and printed material relating to the League of Nations Society, 1942-1944; the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, 1943-1947; C.B.C. script, 1952; correspondence relating to Fire Fighting in Canada, 1956-1966; and research and reference files relating to Clay's radio program, Teen-Age Book Parade, ca. 1952-1964.

Fonds also contains photographs of a variety of subjects including activities of the Canadian Authors Association; various aspects of firefighting across Canada, 1949-1963; members of the League of Nations Society of Canada; photographs for the New Brunswick Travel Bureau of Fredericton, Baker Lake, and Grand Manan Island, and photos for the Ontario Department of Tourism and Information of Tobermory, Upper Canada Village, and Long Sault, [ca. 1967].

Clay, Charles, 1906-1980 : Journalist, author and publisher, Charles Clay, was born in 1906, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. During the 1920s he taught at Indian Reserve Schools in Northern Manitoba and was a United Church missionary. He received his B.A. in 1935 from Wesley college, University of Manitoba. He worked his way through university by reporting for the Winnipeg Tribune, and later by editorial writing for the Winnipeg Free Press, where he was literary editor from 1931 to 1941. During these ten years, Clay also wrote adventure and historical novels for boys. His first published volume, "Swampy Cree Legends" (1938), is a translation of tales in the oral tradition of the Swampy Cree northern Manitoba Native people. Unable to join the Canadian Air Force in 1940, he undertook various publicity assignments for the federal government, free-lanced on war topics for numerous Canadian and American journals and published a weekly syndicated column called the "Listening Post" which kept readers informed of Canada's war work. Clay was an active member of the Canadian Authors Association, acting as secretary and also as editor for the association's "Canadian Author and Bookman" publication from 1942 to 1946. Other organizations he was active in include the Canadian Writers' Foundation, The League of Nations Society and The Canadian Institute of International Affairs. He edited "Fire Fighting in Canada" and contributed articles to "Encyclopaedia Britannica" and Grolier's "Book of Knowledge Annual". From 1952 to 1964, Clay produced Teen-Age Book Parade, a weekly radio program intended to stimulate interest in reading among teens.
