Fonds consists of summonses and invitations to J.J. Gemmell from various lodges of freemasons and chapters of Royal Arch masons, 1864-1876. The material provides information on the officers and members of the various lodges and chapters; their dates and places of meeting; business; payments of dues; celebrations; and funerals of members, etc.

Gemmell, John James, ca. 1835-ca. 1891 : John James Gemmell, was an Ottawa lawyer who was born in Scotland, ca. 1835. He is listed in the Ottawa city directory of 1863 as a law student boarding with Robert Lees, a lawyer whose partner he seems to have become in the following year, 1864. The partnership appears to have lasted until Gemmell's death, probably in 1891. He was survived by his wife Harriet. At the time of the Ottawa census in 1881, he had four children, Henry, Robert, Lilly and Annie, between the ages of 14 and 5.
