Timothy Findley interviews former National Ballet of Canada dancer/instructor Janet Baldwin as part of the research for his novel "The Butterfly Plague" (1969). There are two segments to this unedited interview. In the first, Baldwin describes her experiences in Berlin, Germany, as a member of the Canadian team of ballet dancers participating in the 1936 Olympic games. Her recollections include their arrival in Berlin, where a colossal Nazi flag and a brass band were part of the reception ceremony; the place where she and her husband (Boris) stayed, where the family was warm and friendly but unwilling to discuss politics; the sense that it was dangerous for Jews to be in Germany at that time; the "Heil Hitler" salute that visiting Olympic teams were required to practice; and Adolph Hitler, who delivered a vehement speech at the closing Olympic ceremonies to a crowd which was largely unable to understand the German language. In the second part of the interview, Findley discusses his book, whose central character, Ruth, is based on Baldwin and her life. He asks probing and personal questions of Baldwin, whom he has known since childhood. Topics include: the breakup of her marriage; her parents; her uncle, a hemophiliac, who is the basis for the character of her brother in the novel and the abortions she had to avoid having a child with hemophilia. Findley's questions and comments reveal a great deal about the process of literary creation. <151mn>
