There are a few files and publications in English and French. At the request of the donor, the published material was retained in the collection. This collection is of primary interest to researchers investigating the European origins of the political history of the Ukrainian Canadian community.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Zhuk, Andriy, 1880-1968 : Andriy Zhuk, politician and diplomat, was born in Ukraine in 1880 and from an early age was involved in illegal Ukrainian political activities. He was a member of the Revolutionary Ukrainian Party (RUP) and eventually a co-founder and Secretary General of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Workers Party (USDRP). In 1907, he had to immigrate to Galicia, where he continued to work for the liberation of Ukraine. At the start of the First World War, A. Zhuk and other emigrants from Tsarist Russia founded the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine (Soiuz Vyzvolenia Ukrainy) at Vienna, with the aim to liberate Ukraine in cooperation with the Central Powers.
In 1918, the Soiuz Vyzvolenia Ukrainy (SVU) was liquidated and A. Zhuk became councillor of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affiars, first as a member of the Ukrainian Legation at Vienna and eventually as head of the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He then worked with the exile center of the Western Ukrainian National Republic (ZUNR) as editor and journalist. From 1930, he worked in Lviv in the Ukrainian cooperative movement. In 1939, he returned to Vienna where he lived in retirement until his death in 1968. During his years of retirement, he corresponded with many prominent Ukrainians and wrote articles and publications on various subjects of political and historical interest.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received during the years 1978 to 1985 from George Zuk of Urenna, Austria and from the Shevchenko Scientific Society Sarcelles, France.
