Fonds consists of three letters from Admiral Sir Charles Napier, that of 1844, specifically addressed to James S. Buckingham, and those of 1835 and 1842, omitting any mention of the addressee's name. The 1835 letter deals with the impressment of seamen, while the letter of 1842 refers to the petition of a Captain Manby, 4 pages. Also included are seven letters and notes, 1842-1846, from Admiral Sir Edward Codrington; all except for the letter of 1842, which discusses the use of the lash in the Royal Navy, concern personal matters, 7 pages.

Buckingham, James Silk, 1786-1855 : James Silk Buckingham was an English journalist, Member of Parliament for Sheffield from 1832 to 1837, and a principal founder of the British and Foreign Institute in 1843. He was especially noted as an advocate of reform in the army and navy. His writings include thirty-seven pamphlets, one of which was entitled Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and other British Provinces of North America (1843).
