Fonds consists of papers relating to Roderick McKenzie's interest in ethnology and natural history; and McKenzie family correspondence. There are 16 pages of originals and 19 pages of transcripts.

McKenzie, Roderick, ca. 1761-1844 : Roderick McKenzie, fur trader, was a first cousin of the explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie. Born in Scotland, McKenzie immigrated to Canada in 1784. He entered the service of Gregory, McLeod & Co. which became one of the constituents of the North West Company in 1787. Sent to the Northwest as a clerk in 1785, he served in the Athabasca District for fifteen years, participating in some of his cousin's voyages and establishing Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabasca, which he commanded from 1788 to 1800 and provided with a notable library.

In 1800 he became a partner and agent of McTavish, Frobisher and Co. at Grand Portage, but retired from active trade in 1801. He remained a dormant partner after resigning his last share in the company in 1805, and was involved as a creditor in the protracted litigation over the company's assets after its failure in 1825. He married Louise Rachel Chaboillez in 1803, and in 1804 bought from Simon McTavish's estate the seignory of Terrebonne, where he lived until his death.

Before and in his retirement he devoted much time to the collection and editing of information on the history of the fur trade and on Indian and world ethnology; he is notable as the first Canadian member of the Royal Society of Nothern Antiquaries, Copenhagen, the most advanced archaeological learned society of its time.

The transcripts are said to have been transferred from the papers of W.L. Mackenzie King, now MG 26 J.
MG 19 C 3 consists of two small groups of private papers previously catalogued as MG 55/24, No. 312 and MG 19 C 1, vol. 60.

After McKenzie's death his papers, and those of other fur traders which had become part of his collection, passed to his son-in-law Louis-François-Rodrigue Masson, by whom they were published in part (see MG 19 C 1). The Masson collection contains further McKenzie family papers.
