This is a roundup of major news stories from 1940, with intertitles and voice-over commentary, as follows: 1) Bahamas. Duke of Windsor Takes New Post. This shows a steamer arriving in Nassau, Bahamas harbour. The new Governor of the Bahamas, the Duke of Windsor, arrives by ship with his wife, the Duches of Windsor. The garrison gives the couple a royal salute. Also shown are Government House on New Providence Island and the couple waving from a balcony. 2) England. Nation Ready for "Battle of Britain". This shows British pilots returning from air raid on Berlin. Includes actuality sound recorded at a headquarters where bombers' reports are filed, noting the time of bombing and other details. 2) F.D.R. Presides at Historic Lottery. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown at the U.S. War Department Auditorium, site of the first peacetime random draw to select draftees into the U.S. Army. A historic bowl also used in the 1917 army draft contains capsules which identify draft serial numbers. War Secretary Henry Stimson is shown blindfolded to make the selection. Roosevelt, as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Army, reads the serial number of the first draftee. 4) Mosquitoes Fast Motor Boats Are New Navy Weapons. This item shows test runs of the first of the American Motor Torpedo Boats, part of the Mosquito Fleet. The first boat, PT9, is shown in the water. The fleet's insignia, designed by Walt Disney, is shown. The boat has two gun turrets. 5) Roosevelt Wins. Elected to First Third Term in U.S. History. This item shows lines of voters waiting to vote, polling stations, ballot boxes, defeated Republican presidential candidate Wendell Wilkie and his wife, the town hall at Hyde Park, New York (the home of Roosevelt), and Roosevelt, his mother and wife in the back seat of an open car. There is actuality sound of an NBC radio announcement of Roosevelt's victory. Also shown are crowds celebrating the victory in New York City's~Times Square. Clips labelled 1932, 1936 and 1940 show Roosevelt over the years. 6) Collapse. Actual Films Show Tacoma Bridge Fall. This item shows the intact Tacoma Narrows Bridge, its concrete bending "as though it were rubber" due to the force of strong winds, a car rocking from side to side on the swaying bridge, and the bridge's eventual buckling and collapse.
