The fonds consists of textual records and photographs documenting John Ashworth and members of his family, including his wife, Julia Phillips; his father, John Ashworth; his mother, Sophia Louisa Caldwell and her relations, the Mompessons, the Lindsays and the Hetheringtons; his sister, Sophia Pipon; his son, John Pipon Ashworth and his daughter-in-law, Florence Evans. The papers are arranged into the following series, correspondence and related documents, 1799-1910; financial and estate records, 1713-1923; diaries of John Ashworth, 1844-1904; and newspaper clippings, 1836-1943.

The photographs depict views of John Ashworth's home, Belmont in Aylmer, Québec; group photographs of the Ashworth and Rockcliffe Fellowes families, Aylmer, Québec; Miss Julia Phillips, Ottawa Ontaio; and an 11.2 X 10.2 cm photograph of a portrait of John Gray.

Ashworth (Family) : John Ashworth Jr. (1824-1906), public servant, was appointed a cashier in the Post Office Department in 1844. He moved to Ottawa with the government in 1867, serving until his retirement in 1888. In 1906 he died at his home, Belmont Lodge, near Aylmer, Que. His father, John Ashworth Sr. (1790-1836) came to Canada from Lancashire, England and was Deputy Assistant Commissary General from 1814 to 1836.
