Collection consists of various correspondence exchanged between William Parry and others, including Sir Francis Beaufort, 1824-1825, Baron de Humboldt, 1826, Sir John Franklin, Admiral Sir George Cockburn, Admiral Sir Erasmus Ommaney, Sir George Back and Lord Brougham, 56 pages; Arctic records, 1819-1820, 4 pages, and photograph, ca. 1819, 3 pages. The collection also contains microfilm copy of letters and reports of position made by Parry, commander of H.M.S. Alexander, to John Ross, commander of H.M.S. Isabella, during Ross's Arctic expedition of 1818, 1 reel, A-822.

Parry, William Edward, Sir, 1790-1855 : Rear Admiral and Arctic explorer, Sir William Edward Parry was the fourth son of Dr. Caleb Hiller Parry and was born on 19 Dec. 1790.

Sir William Edward Parry entered the Royal Navy in 1803 and served to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1818, he accompanied Sir John Ross to search for the North-West Passage. He later commanded three expeditions into the Canadian Arctic: in the first, 1819-1820 he penetrated to Melville Island; in the second, 1821-1823, he reached Fury and Hecla Straits; during his last expedition in 1824-1825, he lost one of his ships, the Fury, in Pringe Regent Sound. In 1827, Parry made an unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole by way of Spitzbergen. He was appointed hydrographer to the Navy in 1825, knighted in 1829, and promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1852. He died in 1855.
