Fonds consists of the business and personal papers of Simon McGillivray and other members of the McGillivray family. Records include letterbooks kept by McGillivray while he was commissioner of the United Mexican Silver Mining Company as well as correspondence relating to business and family matters. McGillivray's journals document his voyage to Canada (1814), and matters relating to the North West Company. The fonds also contains agreements and other legal papers of William McGillivray (Simon's brother), and miniature portraits of William McGillivray, Simon McGillivray and his wife Anne Easthope. Finally there is a watercolour and gouache design for the Northwest Company Coat of Arms.

McGillivray, Simon, 1783-1840 : Fur trader

Simon McGillivray was a partner in McTavish, Fraser & Co., London, from 1805, McTavish, McGillivrays & Co., Montreal, from 1813, and McGillivrays, Thain & Co. from 1822. The latter two companies became insolvent in 1825, and in 1829 McGillivray became commissioner of the United Mexican Silver Mining Company. About 1835 he returned to London and became proprietor of the Morning Chronicle.

Most of the papers were received in 1957; the inventory and notes, 1825, were copied in 1959 from originals held by Mr. J.W. Dawkins, and loaned to the National Archives of Canada through Marjorie Wilkins Campbell.
