Office of Deputy Adjutant General : The first Militia Act for United Canada (9 Vict. Cap. 28), passed in 1846, provided for the appointment of a Deputy Adjutant General in Canada West who was to assist the Adjutant General. The Deputy Adjutant General in Upper Canada (the old provincial name was retained within the militia) had the power to issue Militia General Orders, to grant commissions, as well as the responsibility for the organization, training, management and discipline of the militia. The Deputy Adjutants General in Lower Canada and Upper Canada, and their small staffs, were the only full-time officers in United Canada.
