8 photographs.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of correspondence largely concerning the Grand Trunk and other railways. Correspondents include Sir John A. Macdonald, Edward Watkin, T.E. Blackwell, J. Ferrier, Sir Alexander Campbell and Sir John Rose. 1861, 1880-1890; subject files including such topics as Sir John Hickson (biographical material), Thomas Edison's service with the Grand Trunk, appointments to the Grand Trunk, other railways, a Confederation commemorative medal and the St. Clair Tunnel. 1849, 1861-1897, 1938; and memorabilia including a scrapbook and unmounted material relating to social events in Montreal, London, England and other cities, 1864, 1878-1894.
The fonds also contains an assemblage of documents related to John M.C. Muir's (1878-1882) summer employment as a Rodman on the Grand Trunk Rail line, including drawings, prints, architectural drawings, charts, and photographs showing aspects of the line as well as a photograph of Muir; and a certificate and seal of knighthood for Hickson, 1878-1882. The fonds also contains a photograph of Hickson, [ca. 1890].Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Hickson, J. (Joseph), Sir, 1830-1897 : Sir Joseph Hickson was born in England where he worked for the North Eastern Railway and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway before coming to Canada in 1861 as chief accountant of the Grand Trunk Railway Company. In 1874 he became general manager of the company and held that position until 1891. He was knighted in 1890, and died in Montreal in 1897.
