It is situated at the hub of the Mackenzie River drainage system (Athabasca, Slave and Peace rivers). Fort Chipewyan was the scene of numerous struggles between the NWC, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and the XY Company. Its role in the fur trade declined after the introduction of steamboats.
A Roman Catholic mission was founded there in 1851, followed by the Anglicans in 1874. In 1898, the North-West Mounted Police established a post and on July 13, 1899, Treaty No 8 was signed between the Government of Canada and the Woodland Cree, Dunneza (or "Beaver") and Chipewyan.
Fort Chipewyan's population is predominantly made up of Cree, Chipewyan (Dene) and Métis peoples.Note sur les autres formats physiques disponibles :Colour transparency availableSignatures et inscriptions :Inscribed.
