The records were created and/or maintained by the Department of Transport and its predecessors in the Railway Branch of the former Department of Railways and Canals and in the Department of Public Works. The series includes central registry files as well as indexes created by the Department to provide access to the early railway files.
Also included in series are cartographic material, architectural and technical drawings, (RG12M 78903/47), consisting of 3048 plans and records relating to railways, principally under the themes of subsidies, land, leases, charters, construction, surveys, bridges, wharves and terminals.
