Collection consists of microfilmed selections from the Stanhope of Chevening Family collection at the Kent Record Office in England. These selections include: printed Colonial Office reports and telegrams, 1886-1891, relating to the Newfoundland fisheries, trade, and steam navigation from Vancouver to Hong Kong; correspondence between Edward Stanhope and the Marquis of Landsdowne, 1886-1887, concerning the fisheries and the three mile limit; and correspondence with Lord Stanley of Preston, governor general of Canada, 1888, concerning Royal Military College.

Other selections comprise extensive correspondence between James Richard Stanhope, 7th Earl and his wife and William Lyon Mackenzie King, including transcript copies prepared by Stanhope. King and Stanhope wrote about matters of imperial and naval defence and the First World War. Other selections include correspondence about Stanhope's travels in Canada and the United States in 1908 and 1909. This material is located on microfilm reels A-1651 and A-1652.

Stanhope of Chevening (family) : The Stanhope of Chevening Family dates back to James, 1st Earl of Stanhope (1673-1721), a soldier and politician who established the family at Chevening, England. His father was Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield. Through many generations, members of the family served in a variety of public and military capacities. Edward of Revesby Abbey (1840-1893) was the brother of Arthur Phillip, 6th Earl of Stanhope (1838-1905). Edward served as secretary of state for the colonies, 1886-1887. James Richard, 7th Earl of Stanhope (1880-1967) was the son of Arthur Phillip. He married Lady Eileen Agatha Browne (1889-1940) in 1921. He served in the British Cabinet in the War Office, Foreign Office, Ministry of Works, Education, Admiralty and as lord president of the Council.
