Fonds consists of dance and personal papers, n.d., 1925-1957 including notes, clippings, music and Sergei Marinoff School of Classic Dancing Lessons, a clipping and a letter, 1939, to Doris McCarthy from Gwen Osborne in Paris, programmes, souvenir programme and clipping of the 5th Canadian Ballet Festival, Ottawa, 1953, National Ballet of Canada programme (Ottawa) and souvenir programme, 1953, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival programmes, 1957; and Peter Cunningham material including correspondence and material relating to her son's involvement in amateur sport, RCAF career, his death, and the Peter Cunningham Memorial Arena, n.d., 1947-1973.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting the career of F/O Peter Cunningham.

Cunningham, Doris McCarthy, 1903-1986 : Doris McCarthy worked as a clerk in the Department of Finance, Ottawa, and studied dance with Gwen Osborne, as well as teaching dance herself, in the 1920s. She married Fred Cunningham in 1927 and retired from dance to raise a family. From the 1950s through the 1970s, she ran the Gill Bookstore in Ottawa.

One of the Cunninghams' children, Peter Kyle "Red" Cunningham (b. 1932) was noted locally as an amateur hockey and football player. Despite interest from the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, Peter Cunningham chose to follow a career as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was posted in 1953 to the No. 3 Fighter Wing Squadron in Zweibrucken, West Germany, where he singlehandedly organized a hockey team, the 3 Wing Flyers, that represented the squadron against several West European clubs. Peter Cunningham died in an aerial accident in 1954.

The Peter Cunningham Memorial Arena was built in Zweibrucken in recognition of his work the following year. The team he established, which became the RCAF Flyers in 1956, did much to popularize hockey in Europe and to strengthen its association among Europeans with Canada.
