Mohegan Indian Tribe of Connecticut : The Mohegan Tribe are a sovereign tribal nation whose traditional territory is in Connecticut. Under the leadership of Uncas (1598-1683), the Mohegans split off from the Pequot Tribe of upstate New York and pursued a strategy of friendship toward the English. In the eighteenth century, the colony of Connecticut would aggressively disregard this long-standing alliance and lay claim to large sections of Mohegan land. The Tribe gained federal recognition in 1994, re-establishing government-to-government relations with the United States.

Weyonomon, Mahomet, d. 1736 : Mahomet (also known as Mamohet) was the grandson of Mohegan sachem Oweneco and heir to the title. Mahomet was still a child at the time of Oweneco's death so his uncle Cesar assumed the sachemship. In 1723 Cesar died and Mahomet was again decried as too young. The grand council of the tribe decided in favour of Ben Uncas, who was succeeded in 1726 by his son of the same name.

In 1735 Mahomet sailed to England and laid a memorial of the case of the Mohegan lands before George II. Mahomet died and was buried in England awaiting a decision. He died before learning that the Mohegans had voted on who was the true sachem and decided unanimously in his favour.
