Fonds consists of financial records, correspondence, articles and news releases, clippings and miscellaneous material concerning the Montrealer Nachrichten Publishing Company, n.d., 1954-1975; correspondence, clippings, catalogues, biographical, autobiographical and miscellaneous material concerning the artistic work of Mario von Brentani, n.d., ca. 1959-1980.

Fonds also contains photographs depicting the activities of the German-Canadian community in Montreal, [ca. 1960-1975].

Heil de Brentani, Mario, 1908-1982 : Mario von Brentani, born in 1908 in Austria-Hungary, was educated in Germany, receiving his Bachelor's degree in Science from the University of Frankfurt am Main. He served with the German military during World War II and came to Canada in 1952. Here he worked as Montreal representative of Der Nordwestern until 1954, when he founded the Montrealer Nachrichten Publishing Company, which published the weekly Montrealer Nachrichten and the monthly Ihre Brigitte.

The Montrealer Nachrichten, served primarily the German Canadians of Quebec by keeping them informed on Quebec political and social life and German Canadian social and cultural activities in the Montreal area. Reports on German political social and cultural life in the homeland, concentrated on the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (D.D.R.), and served to make the D.D.R. better known to German readers and Canadians in general. Ihre Brigitte, which after 1965 appeared as a monthly rather than as a sub-section of the Montrealer Nachrichten, was directed at meeting the needs of German Canadian women. The ever increasing costs of publishing, combined with limited circulation, brought about the demise of both newspapers in 1975.

In addition to his work with the German language press, Mario von Brentani was active in German club life in Montreal, helping to found the local German Canadian Business Men's Association. In Canada Brentani also became a noted painter of Canadian Inuit. He began his career as an artist in 1954 and his paintings have been exhibited in Montreal, 1968, Berlin, 1970, Vienna, 1970, Moscow, 1972, as well as in other centres in Europe and Canada.
