Fonds consists of photographs and textual material relating to Lyon's life and career. The fonds includes photographs depicting the return from the Boer War of 1st Section "D" Company.

Textual material consists of three South African War diaries detailing Lyon's service in the war, day to day living conditions, military patrols, and battles, 1899-1900, 2 cm; military and civilian documents including certificates and lists regarding Lyon's medical education at McGill University, his practice of medicine, and his 1915 enlistment as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps and then the Canadian Army Medical Corps, 1897-1922, 1944, 1 cm; Arctic documents including narratives and excerpts concerning the topography of the Canadian Arctic, and D.A. Nichols' "The Arctic Archipelago", n.d., 1939, 1 cm.

The fonds also contains prints that comprise a Canadian "Patriotic Calendar", ca. 1900.

Included in horizontal storage: military commissions; certificate of Registration, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, 1919; Admission to Medical Council of Canada. All items are in container 2.

Lyon, George Robert Douglas : George Robert Douglas Lyon, militia officer physician, served in the South African War as a Corporal in "D" Company 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, 1899-1900. After the war, he graduated from the McGill University Faculty of Medicine in 1906. During World War I he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. After the war he was a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
