Fonds consists of a group of medals and decorations, 1918-1953, including the Victoria Cross, which were awarded to Lieut-Cdr. Rowland Bourke, R.N.V.R. The fonds also contains a scrapbook, 1955, of news clippings of the 100th anniversary ceremony of the creation of the Victoria Cross, several clippings concerning the award of the Victoria Cross to Canadians including Rowland R.L. Bourke. Also included are a number of invitations and photographs of the ceremony. The fonds also contains copies of two undated photographs which are portraits of Bourke.

Bourke, Rowland, 1885-1958 : Rowland Bourke, naval officer, was born in London, England. He came to Canada before World War I and when war was declared he attempted, unsuccessfully, to enlist in the Canadian military, his poor eye-sight preventing acceptance. He later joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves as a commander of Motor Launch 276. In April 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order during an attack on Zeebrugge, Belgium, and on 10 May 1918 he received the Victoria Cross for rescuing Royal Navy Sailors under enemy fire during an attack on Ostend, Belgium. Bourke died in Esquimalt, B.C.
