The fonds also contains photographs of Main's family and aviation career.
Also included in the fonds is a sound recording of recollections by W.H. Heath and E. Henley about the flight of the R-34 Airship in 1919, recorded for a CBC program in 1965.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Main, J. R. K. (John Robert Kennedy), 1894- : John Robert Kennedy Main, public servant, rancher and aviator, was born and educated in Pincher Creek, Alta. He then attended Calgary Normal School. In addition to teaching, Main held various other positions including pioneer cattle rancher, liquor vendor, railroad surveyor, engineer, soldier and pilot. During World War I, he served overseas with the 44th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionery Force, the 9th Field Co. of the Canadian Engineers, and in Salonika with the Royal Engineers. In 1917-1918, Main served with the RFC - RAF in Egypt.
Ken Main is most noted for his efforts on behalf of aviation in Canada and as the author of Voyageurs of the Air (1968). From 1929 to 1932 he was a flying instructor with the R.C.A.F. at Camp Borden. Subsequently he became Chief Instructor for the Ottawa Flying Club and later the Toronto Flying Club. In 1936 he joined the Air Services Branch of the Department of Transport and eventually became the Director of the Civil Aviation Branch. From 1960 to 1963, Main was Canadian representative on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council in Montréal.
