Grand Lodge of the Order of Knights of St. Crispin : The Knights of St. Crispin, trade union, was a secret labour organization, which combined the skills of the traditional shoemaker with the new methods of factory production. It was founded in Milwaukee, Wis. in 1867. Growth was slow but by 1870, there were 327 lodges and perhaps 50,000 members. Eighteen lodges existed in Canada in 1871. The Knights of St. Crispin were primarily interested in wage levels and employee rights. The order lost important strikes in the early 1870s and suffered in the depression of the 1870s. Though their organization rapidly declined, it provided a basis of support of the growing Knights of Labour.
