This consists of eleven interview cuts recorded for the CBC radio series Our Canada, telling the story of the ordinary people, events and developments in the railways, wheatlands, waterways, mines, airways, industries, communications, arts, governments, philanthropies and religons that have shaped Canada. A twin lathe operator at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Vancouver describes her job. (two cuts). An engine lathe operator at Boeing Aircraft describes his job. Another plant employee describes his work installing the hydraulic mechanism that operates the retractable landing gear and on how the four-year-old plant has grown (two cuts of this). A women who has worked as a fitter at the plant for three months describes her job. Before this she was a bank clerk. She began to learn to fly about a year ago but her course was cut short due to the wartime suspension of civil flying on the West Coast. She wants to be a pilot (2 cuts of this). An official at the Dominion Research Station at Summerland, British Columbia describes the work of the experimental farm in the study of plant diseases, particularly of fruit trees. In a second extract he describes the history of the station and describes the Okanagan Valley. A man describes the town of Banff, Alberta. Another man describes how the Alberta oil industry is working to help the war effort. He describes how oil produced in the Turner Valley is shipped by pipeline to Calgary, for use as aviation fuel for the training of airforce pilots on the prairies, and motor fuel for use in the construction of the Alaska Highway. The urban and agricultural population of the prairies also uses the fuel. The unidentified speaker exhorts people to use gasoline very sparingly because it is needed in the war effort and to take in the prairie harvest. An unidentified man, possibly Alberta Premier William Aberhart, speaks on the following subjects: political freedom, difficulty of living under increasing regimentation due to war,~threat of debt bondage in postwar years destroying ability of maintaining a reasonable standard of living; and a call for reform of monetary system to place it under a government-controlled commission. The speaker states that it would be "tragic" if in fighting Nazi totalitarianism; Canadians were to find themselves "enmeshed in a totaletarianism of our own making".
