This videotaped documentary produced by the "Public Eye" chronicles a typical day in the life of an unemployed alcoholic in Toronto. Voice-over commentary by [John], also known as "Red", accompanies footage of his endless odyssey from mission to mission, searching for meals and shelter and avoiding arrest for vagrancy. Footage includes [John] arising from a barracks bed in a hostel; walking the streets; sitting on a park bench; during a Salvation Army church service; in a food line-up; and staring out the window of a shabby room. Additional footage includes: ants crawling over a drunk in a park; groups of alcoholics; and, in contrast, a child sauntering along the street. [John] reflects on the lack of educational and other opportunities for "tramps"; the self-perpetuating nature of their condition; the contempt shown by the public and by the police; his own unstable family background; his addiction to alcohol; and his feeling of hopelessness. This program concludes with a special news report on that day's budget speech by Minister of Finance Edgar Benson. <60mn>
