The massive job of building a city (Thompson, Manitoba) in the northern wilderness is captured in this footage. The early stages of construction, development and settlement are depicted on the reels, as follows. ROLL 1: Aerial shots of northern terrain, a swift river (probably the Burntwood River), and setting explosives for blasting rock. ROLL 2: Bulldozers clearing earth and bush, test-drilling sites, building A-frames, and "cat-trains", which ran supplies to the Thompson site in the winter of 1956/1957, before the rail link was completed. ROLL 3: Explosives being set, blasting rock, and a helicopter landing in a clearing. ROLL 4: Additional cat-train footage. ROLL 5: Sawmill, mine workers at a temporary headframe, barracks, building a water pipe and insulating it, and aerial shots of road and bridge construction. ROLL 6: Aerial shots of cleared land for highway or railway, and building a log cabin in the bush. ROLL 7: Headframe, cat-trains, aerial shots of construction of roads and railway, detailed sequences of railway construction, and unloading supplies and material from CNR trains. ROLL 8: The early stages of construction of the Thompson plant (i.e. pouring cement foundations, moving earth, etc.) and the construction of nearby roads are depicted, using both ground and aerial shots. The workers' barracks and camp are also shown. ROLL 9: Additional footage of early construction, cat-trains, etc. and one sequence of a woman in her garden. ROLL 10: Important figures behind the Thompson project are shown touring housing under construction in Thompson. There are also aerial shots of construction, and a Canada goose. Identifiable men are Honorary Chairman Dr. John Thompson, Vice-President Ralph D. Parker, mining engineer Sac Crandall and James C. Parles, manager of Inco's Manitoba Division. <50mn>

1. Dated from Kodak stock edge code and subject matter.~2. Some of this footage was used in the film NEW CITY NORTH.~3. Phillips-Gutkin and Associates Ltd. of Winnipeg apparently had some involvement in this project, based on information on the original can label. Sponsor information also provided by the original can label.~4. The 16mm footage (roll 10) has a 1956 Kodak stock edge code, but the advanced state of construction suggests it was filmed later than the balance of the footage described above.
